Rich Cassens

Nevada County Search and Rescue
Groot's Handler
Rich has been involved in Search and Rescue for 9 years. After attending one K9 team training to hide for the dogs he decided he wanted to be involved with the K9 team. Watching the dogs run through the woods and follow the scent trail to the subject captivated him.

Rich got a floppy-eared fuzzball of a Golden Retriever named Sunny about 6 months after joining Nevada County Search and Rescue, and after 2 years of training, they became Mission Ready in wilderness area searching. In August of last year, Sunny passed her HRD (human remains detection) certification. Sunny loves the job and is still going out on searches, but after 8.5 years of working, she is slowing down and deserves to take a little time off. Rich got his second floppy-eared fuzzball of a Golden Retriever, whom he named Groot, about 2.5 years ago. After 6 months of trying to figure out what discipline to focus on they began training in earnest. In December of last year, he passed his HRD certification and in less than a month they will take the test to become Mission Ready in wilderness area searching. Although they have completely different energy and drive levels, both dogs love their job and Rich enjoys being able to give back to our community by working with Search and Rescue.
